The CDC has once again updated its mask recommendations for New York, and this time, 36 counties in the state are showing "high" Covid-19 levels. That means you may want to resupply on N95 and KN95 face masks.

In those counties, pictured below, the CDC has recommended New Yorkers wear masks indoors to help prevent local hospitals from getting overwhelmed. The recent increase in numbers is due in part to the growth of BA.2.12.1 — a variant of the Omicron strain that caused a Covid surge during the holidays.

This CDC map published May 5, 2022, shows which New York state counties are at low (green), medium (yellow) or high (orange) community levels of Covid-19. Masks are only recommended indoors in areas with high levels of Covid.

To be clear, masks in these areas are recommended, not mandated. But if you haven't been in the habit of checking on your supply since the numbers dipped earlier this year, it may be a good time to restock.

Wearing the most protective mask you can that fits well remains one of the key preventative measures you can take to stop the spread of Covid-19 (along with getting vaccinated and self-testing).
